Rei is a recent graduate from the City College of New York where she completed her Master of Science in Architecture degree. Before moving to New York, Rei completed her B. Arch in Paris and one year of the Erasmus Program at Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta. She is currently interning at CetraRuddy Architecture – an experience that developed my creativity, design and teamwork skills. During her time at City College, Rei focused on sustainable, integrated, environmentally responsive designs and participated in research projects related to green walls and kinetic façade systems.

What pushed you to pursue your studies outside of Albania?

I decided to study abroad for multiple reasons. The main one was the desire to experience different cultures and to broaden my perspective on architecture and urban design. Being able to visually and physically experience public spaces, historic landmarks and art in European cities, has always helped me in the design process.

What were the challenges you faced as a woman moving from Albania to Paris to pursue your Bachelor of Architecture then to New York City to pursue your Master’s?

One of the biggest challenges for me was leaving all my family and friends behind to study in Paris at a very young age, only 17 years old. Also, living in such big and busy cities was very challenging since I grew up in a small city like Tirana which is not as culturally varied as Paris or New York. As a woman I quickly had to learn that diversity comes in different forms that I had to coexist with.

What was the shift in the curriculum between Albania, Paris, and New York City?

When I started school in Paris for me it was very exciting to learn about architecture by visiting, drawing and photographing the city instead of learning about it through books. During my four years in Paris the curriculum was very much concentrated on construction techniques and functionalism whereas in New York I focused more on the sensorial experience of the user and the impact of my design in local communities.

While practicing in New York City and Paris, were there moments when you faced discrimination?

Unfortunately, I have faced discrimination several times especially in my first year of studies in Paris. But those unpleasant moments have also pushed me to work harder and improve my skills. However, I have to admit that I have formed very close friendships with amazing people in all three countries that I have studied.

Do you see yourself practicing architecture in the U.S. or in another country?

Having the opportunity to travel to a new city and learn a new skill set is very fulfilling. My goal is to continue immersing myself to other cultures and transform our built environment into a more sustainable one in as many places as I can. I see myself practicing architecture in both developed countries such as the U.S. and developing countries like Albania.
